What Are the Key Stages in the Water Bottling Process?
The steps involved in bottling clean and treated water can vary depending on the specific process of the water treatment plant. However, there are key stages involved in every treatment process – regardless of the chosen method of contaminant removal: water sourcing, pre-treatment, main treatment, bottle preparation, quality control and send-off.
Here is a bit of a breakdown on our water treatment and bottling process here at Water Products & Solutions:
- Step One: Water Sourcing – We receive our water from the City of Sheridan municipal supply. Once it reaches our facility, the pre-treatment stage begins.
- Step Two: Pre-Treatment – To ensure the incoming water is in the best state for comprehensive treatment, it first passes through a carbon filter. This filter is designed to remove large contaminant particles, various chemicals like chlorine, various organic materials, and any existing odors, making it not only cleaner, but better-tasting as well.
- Step Three: 1st Stage of Comprehensive Treatment: Reverse Osmosis – Once through the carbon filter, the water then receives reverse osmosis treatment. Our state-of-the-art reverse osmosis system features five membranes that the water must pass through. Because they’re semi-permeable, these various barriers effectively trap smaller impurities that were not eliminated by the carbon filter in pre-treatment. Reverse osmosis is one of the best ways to purify water as it removes a variety of contaminants like heavy metals, minerals like fluoride, and other dissolved solids.
- Step Four: 2nd Stage of Comprehensive Treatment: UV Light Disinfection – Reverse osmosis is excellent at removing numerous minerals, chemicals, and even some viruses and bacteria. But, to ensure drinking water is fully safe and free from harmful bacteria and microorganisms, once through the reverse osmosis system, the water passes by a UV light. This light operates at such a frequency that disrupts microbe activity, including cryptosporidium and giardia – parasites known to cause diarrhea and other gastrointestinal issues.
- Step Five: 3rd Stage of Comprehensive Treatment: Sanitized Storage – The last step before being bottled and delivered to your front door (or waiting to be picked up), the now contaminant-free water is held in a storage tank. This tank holds an ozone generator that releases ozone particles into the clean water to ensure that it remains disinfected and completely sanitized before it is bottled in our five-gallon jugs.
- Step Six: Bottle Preparation – While the water is being filtered and enhanced, we clean and sanitize every water jug before it is filled and ready to be enjoyed. Using another ozone generator, we ensure the entire receptacle is completely free of any bacteria or other impurities before filling it up with safe, fresh water once more.
- Step Seven: Final Steps – Once we’ve done a quality assurance check and verify that all bottles have been appropriately cleaned and thoroughly disinfected, we fill them with the treated water and cap them off. Our water jugs are then delivered to your home, or available for pickup at the following locations:

Are There Quality Control Measures in Place for Safe Water Bottling?
Absolutely. Unchecked and unmonitored water is unsafe water – even in a professional treatment plant like ours. To mitigate this, we employ regular safety checks where we test things like the incoming water supply itself (to ensure we know exactly which contaminants we’re treating for), the efficiency of our filters, pH levels throughout the treatment process, and the structural integrity of the water jugs and caps.
These quality assurance checks not only ensure that we remain compliant with local and national health codes and regulations, but also that you receive the cleanest, safest, and healthiest water possible. By performing frequent batch inspections and full system disinfections, we’re able to provide valuable insight into our bottling process and make necessary changes as needed so that the water quality remains optimal.
What Are the Environmental Impacts of Water Bottling?
Especially when compared to the impacts of single-use plastic water bottles, our treatment and bottling process for five-gallon water jugs is much friendlier to the environment. Here are some of the most notable benefits of buying bottled water in bulk:
- Reduced Plastic Waste: Five-gallon jugs are made of durable plastic designed for multiple uses, often refilled and reused dozens of times before eventually being recycled. This reusability significantly cuts down on the amount of plastic waste compared to single-use bottles.
- Lower Carbon Footprint: Since these jugs are reused, they generate fewer carbon emissions over time compared to producing, transporting, and disposing of multiple single-use bottles. Transportation emissions are also often lower, as bulk water delivery reduces the need for multiple trips.
- Water Efficiency: Five-gallon jugs require less water for production relative to single-use bottles, especially given their reusability. This makes them a more sustainable choice in terms of both water and resource conservation.
- Recycling and Reuse: Because we take back and reuse empty jugs that are still in good condition, the usability and lifespan of the receptacles are extended. Once they do reach the end of safe usability, they are recycled, minimizing the impact on landfills.
- Energy Use in Sanitization: While cleaning and refilling five-gallon jugs does use energy, this is generally far less than the energy required to produce and dispose of numerous single-use bottles. However, the cleaning process must be done carefully to avoid introducing any contaminants.
However, it is important to keep in mind that while five-gallon water jugs are more eco-friendly than their single-use counterparts, there are other water treatment options that leave even less of an impact. If you’re looking for a sustainable water treatment solution, you might consider alternative methods such as point-of-use systems or whole-house filtration that provides you with fresh, clean water at every faucet.
